Designer Spotlight: Ella Moss

Pamella Protzel Scott always loved getting dressed up and was cultivating her own unique sense of style from a young age. The Los Angeles native is the designer and creative director behind Ella Moss. It began with her friends constantly “shopping” her closet of vintage, handmade and contemporary clothes. Pamella studied graphic design after high school, recognized her true calling and quickly enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in downtown LA. In 2001 she co-founded Ella Moss with Moise Emquies of Splendid. The name comes from a combination of their nicknames, Ella for Pamella and Moss for Moise. So who is the Ella Moss girl? “She’s a modern bohemian. She travels the world and falls in love easily. She listens to feel-good music and drives with the windows down. She shops at flea markets and thinks a beach vacation is the best kind of vacation. She smiles easily and laughs a lot – often at herself.”

They started out as an independent tee shirt line that embraced cutting-edge style of the growing punk rock scene. With a combination of fashion, music and art, Chaser created a unique niche within a crowded tee shirt marketplace. Music is still the soul of the label more than 20 years later, but Chaser continues to evolve beyond tee shirts with innovative fabrications, washes, printing processes and design-driven styles.

Designer Spotlight: Language Los Angeles

Language is all about modern romance, which is why it is a perfect fit for us! It began with the partnership of Michael Schreier (C.P.A.) and Avril Ozen (designer) and their perfect blend of financial intelligence and expertise in product development.  1995 marked the opening of Eastwest Clothing, with Language as one of their first brands. But it didn’t really begin to flourish until 2001 when the concept of “the t-shirt as a blank canvas” began. Based in a 1950′s warehouse in east Los Angeles, 90% of Language is manufactured in the U.S.A. Language has become the go-to line for the reinvented t-shirt. It’s tops are inspired by vintage finds and world travels. The Language collections tell a new story with each season of exotic locales and a relaxed lifestyle. We are packing our bags full of Language!

Style Tips for the Modernshopgirl: The Hi-Low Skirt

AKA the mullet skirt. All of us Modernshopgirls are crazy about this trend! It is universally flattering, shows off your fabulous shoes and shows a little leg without the worries of a mini skirt. What is not to love? We are loading up on them for summer and here are some ways you can rock this party in the front, business in the back skirt!

#1 – Pick a pattern! The easiest way to wear this trend is to choose a pattern with several different colors, this give you a lot of options on top! This zig zag skirt is the perfect blend of color and neutrals. We paired it with our fav Michael Stars short sleeve dolman in navy.  Add wedges and a statement necklace and you are ready!

#2 – Black is back! We know, we know. Color is in for summer, but black is the perfect counterpart to summer’s bright colors. Check out Ella Moss‘s tie dyed tank, we knotted the bottom to make it a bit more fitted and a bit more bohemian. Bangles and a matching necklace keep this black anything but basic.

#3 – Lady like detail! The Modernshopgirls are swooning over this polka dot hi-low skirt. With brass buttons up the front and sheer soft fabric you will be lunching like a lady. To make the skirt pop, we added a the cowl neck tank in turquoise by Michael Stars.  A simple Chan Luu necklace adds the perfect lady like touch.

Style Tips for the Modernshopgirl: Cardigans

Cardigans are making a comeback and they are not just for grandpas anymore! With so many new styles and colors, it was hard to decide which looks to style. But we powered through and decided on 3 simple ways to style this essential layering piece for any wardrobe. Check it out.

1 – Leave it to Free People to come up the latest and greatest version of the cardigan. This hi-lo style in vibrant yellow may seem difficult to style at first but just focus on proportion. We paired it with Hudson’s Hampton short and a Michael Stars striped boat neck. Keep your accessories simple and neutral like a straw fedora, long beaded necklace and neutral belt.

#2 – Pick a pattern! Soon as we opened the box this Splendid open cardigan with tiny zig zag weave jumped out at us. The oatmeal and grey color are perfectly paired with Rich & Skinny’s Legacy skinny in Monarch. We kept the laying simple with a Michael Stars grey camisole. Finish the look with Nashelle’s Identity necklace and Dogeared’s new Mantra necklace.

#3 – Tie it on with a maxi dress! Maxi dresses are here to stay so why not find new ways to style them? Again, we snagged Splendid‘s open solid cardigan and did a loose waist knot with this Ella Moss maxi. The white cardigan keeps the look clean and put together. Make the colors pop with a simple turquoise necklace.

Style Tips for the Modernshopgirl: Tribal Print

Tribal print is everywhere this spring/summer season and here at Modernshopgirl we are no exception. We love the fresh patterns and new color combos. There are so many fun ways to wear this trend; here are some tips to embrace the your inner indian princess without the feather headdress.

#1 – Keep the print small if you are daring enough to try Lucky Brand’s head to toe tribal print dress. The small geometric patterns and darker colors keep the look simple but chic. Add sleek and modern jewelry like Dogeared’s long Karma necklace and silver bangles. An easy earthy tote completes the look.

#2 – You don’t have to match, just compliment. We paired Free People’s tribal print skinny with a Michael Stars navy tank and Lucky Brand’s lace trim cardigan in oatmeal. The tank brings out the dusty blue in the pants and the cardi gives the look a relaxed vibe.

#3 – Add a neutrals! Ella Moss’s tribal print cold shoulder top has flare to spare. Rich & Skinny‘s Coronado crop in sand keep the look simple and keeps the focus on the print. Again we went with sleek modern jewelry. A gold cuff and layered chains are the perfect pair.
